2024 Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum (CHEF) ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The 2024 Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum annual conference will explore healthcare equity, focusing on difficult ethical challenges and solutions that advance the fair and just delivery of healthcare to under-served and underrepresented populations. Addressing healthcare disparities requires a multi-faceted approach, including policy changes, increased cultural humility in healthcare delivery, improved access to education and preventive services, and efforts to address health-related social needs. Identifying and recognizing the interconnected nature of these disparities will allow providers to work towards equitable healthcare for all people in a manner that aligns with professional and institutional values.

Objectives:

Participants will increase their understanding of ethical problems and solutions concerning healthcare equity, including but not limited to ethical issues arising from:
a. economic barriers to accessing health services and healthcare insurance;
b. racial, cultural, and linguistic bias and discrimination in healthcare;
c. gender bias and discrimination in healthcare;
d. citizenship and nationality bias and discrimination in healthcare;
e. ability-related bias and discrimination in healthcare.

About me

Dr. Middleton has been a theologian/ethicist from 1973 till the present for a total of 50 years, 45 of which have been in Catholic Health Care. Carl holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, a master’s degree in Moral Theology from the University of Detroit, a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, a Master of Religious Education Degree and a Master of Divinity Degree from SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan.

Dr. Middleton also has an extensive work record including teaching ethics in a Catholic Seminary, nursing schools, medical residency programs, and several universities: serving as Vice President for Theology and Ethics for several Catholic Health Systems. He is currently serving as Immediate Past President of the Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum Board.

Dr. Middleton is a noted lecturer and has co-authored five books/manuals: Teaching the Ten Commandments Today, Ethics Committees: A Practical Approach, Integrative Health Care: an Emerging Approach to the Art of Healing, Ethics Committee Resource Manual and Healing Ministry in the Age of Genetics.
